Regular Coffee Drinking Linked to Better Cognitive Performance in Older Adults

What if your daily coffee ritual does more than wake you up — what if it helps keep your brain younger?

A study in the Journal of the American Heart Association (PMID: 39673298) found that older adults with atrial fibrillation who drank ~5 cups of coffee per day showed significantly better cognitive performance compared to non-drinkers. This is notable because atrial fibrillation is a major risk factor for accelerated cognitive decline.

The Study:
Researchers analyzed cognitive test scores in older adults (~73 years old) with atrial fibrillation and assessed coffee intake using validated dietary tools.

Key Findings:
11% improvement in processing speed, coordination, and attention
“Cognitive age” calculated to be 6.7 years younger in the highest coffee consumers
>20% lower inflammatory markers in participants drinking five cups daily
Clear dose-response relationship — more coffee, better cognitive performance

Why it matters:
Federal guidelines consider 3–5 cups/day of plain black coffee safe for most adults. This study suggests that within these ranges, coffee may offer neuroprotective benefits, especially for populations at higher risk of cognitive decline.

Takeaway:
Your morning coffee may be doing more than boosting alertness — it may help keep your brain sharper, faster, and biologically younger. ☕🧠
